What to eat on a GLP-1 when you're not hungry

Short answer: eat by the clock, keep portions very small, and choose foods that pack protein into a few bites: Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, soft fish, lentil soup, a smoothie with milk or yogurt. Sip fluids between meals. Skipping food entirely tends to make things worse, not better.
This is the low-appetite version of our main guide, what to eat when you're eating less. It applies whether the cause is a GLP-1 medication such as Wegovy or Zepbound, or anything else that has taken your appetite away.
Why eating nothing backfires
A 2025 joint advisory from four US medical societies describes a cycle some people fall into on GLP-1s: they do not eat because their stomach feels unsettled, the empty stomach makes that feeling worse, and they eat even less.1 Its advice is a small breakfast, then small meals every three to four hours, with adequate fluids.1
The same advisory reports calorie intake falling by 16% to 39% on these medications, and warns that very low intakes, under about 1,200 calories a day for women and 1,800 for men, make it hard to get enough vitamins and minerals.1
Eat by the clock
Set three or four times a day and eat something at each one, hungry or not. A few bites count. The aim is a steady trickle of protein and fluid, not full meals.
Foods that go down easily
| Food | Portion | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Greek yogurt, plain | 170 g (6 oz) | about 17 g |
| Cottage cheese | half a cup | about 12 g |
| Eggs | 2 | about 12 g |
| Canned tuna or salmon | 85 g (3 oz) | about 20 g |
| Lentil soup | 1 cup | about 9 g |
| Milk or soy milk | 1 cup | 7 to 8 g |
Protein values are typical figures from USDA FoodData Central and vary by brand.2
Soft, cool and bland foods are usually easiest: yogurt, smoothies, soups, eggs, oatmeal, bananas, rice. The advisory also mentions ginger or peppermint tea.1 Very fatty, fried or very high-fiber foods are the ones it suggests going easy on in the first days after a start or a dose increase.1
When you don't just lack appetite — you forget entirely
There is a difference between not feeling like eating and not noticing that you have not eaten. The second one surprises people, and it is the more consequential of the two, because nothing internal will prompt you.
What works is moving the prompt outside your body.
- Attach eating to something that already happens — a medication, the end of a meeting, the school run. A habit you already have is a far better trigger than an intention.
- Alarms, not reminders. A notification you can dismiss will be dismissed. Something that requires you to stand up works better.
- Put the food in the way. Yogurt at the front of the fridge, nuts on the desk. If finding the food is a step, the step will not happen.
- Prepare when you are able, eat when you are not. The capable hour is rarely the hungry hour. Portioning three days of something on a Sunday removes the decision from the day it matters.
- Keep one default meal that requires no thought at all. Decision-making is the part that fails first.
Water-rich foods when drinking is also hard
If both eating and drinking have gone quiet, food that is mostly water does two jobs at once.
| Food | Roughly | Also brings |
|---|---|---|
| Broth or clear soup | 90%+ water | Sodium, and it is warm, which many find easier |
| Watermelon, melon | about 92% water | Potassium, vitamin C |
| Cucumber, lettuce, celery | about 95% water | Volume with almost no effort to chew |
| Citrus | about 87% water | Vitamin C, and acidity helps when taste is dulled |
| Yogurt | about 85% water | Protein and calcium in the same spoon |
| Tomatoes | about 94% water | Potassium |
A bowl of soup with beans in it is close to the ideal food for a day like this: fluid, sodium, protein and fibre, all requiring very little from you.
When your stomach is actively unsettled
Low appetite and a queasy stomach are different problems and want different answers. When the stomach is the issue, the usual nutrient-density advice is wrong — rich, dense food is exactly what will not stay down.
- Plain and dry first. Crackers, toast, plain rice, banana. Get something in, then build.
- Cool or room temperature is often easier than hot, partly because strong smells are part of what puts people off.
- Separate drinking from eating by twenty minutes or so in both directions.
- Small and frequent beats a proper meal on these days; a proper meal is likely to be abandoned.
- Sit up afterwards. Lying down with a slow-emptying stomach is reliably worse.
If this is most days rather than occasional days, it is a prescriber conversation. There are dose and timing adjustments available, and eating around the problem indefinitely is not the intended plan.
Timing, and the evening problem
A pattern that catches a lot of people: nothing all day, then the only real food of the day late in the evening, when the stomach empties slowest and lying down is a couple of hours away.
Finishing eating two to three hours before bed helps reflux and sleep quality both. A short walk after a meal — ten minutes, not exercise — is one of the few things that reliably helps food move. Neither is a rule, and on a day where the only window you have is 9pm, eating at 9pm beats not eating.
Make small portions count
- Stir milk powder or Greek yogurt into soup, oatmeal or mashed potato.
- Blend a smoothie: milk or yogurt, a banana, berries, a spoon of nut butter.
- Eat the protein first. If you stop after five bites, they should be the right five.
- Keep ready-to-eat options in the fridge so eating takes no effort.

Drink between meals
Liquid with food fills a small stomach quickly, so many people do better drinking between meals. Small, frequent sips. The reference amounts are in how much water to drink on a GLP-1.
If low appetite comes with low energy
Eating and drinking very little is one of the plainest reasons for feeling flat. We go through the others in why a GLP-1 can make you tired.
Where a drink mix fits
On days when food is minimal, a glass of something that carries a few nutrients is easier than another meal. Zornava Replenish is one option: electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium), a prebiotic fiber and vitamins C, D3, B1, B6, folate and B12, in water. It has no protein and no calories to speak of, so it is an addition to the foods above, not a substitute.
When to call your prescriber
Call if you cannot keep fluids down, are eating almost nothing for more than a few days, feel dizzy or faint, or are urinating much less than usual. The advisory notes that dehydration on GLP-1s has been linked to kidney problems.1 Your prescriber can adjust the dose or timing.
Frequently asked questions
What should I eat on a GLP-1 when I'm not hungry?
Very small portions of protein-rich, easy foods at set times: Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, fish, lentil soup or a milk-based smoothie, with fluids between meals.
Is it okay to skip meals if I'm not hungry?
Regularly skipping meals makes it hard to get enough protein, vitamins and minerals, and an empty stomach can make an unsettled stomach worse. The joint advisory recommends small meals every three to four hours.
How do I get nutrients without large meals?
Choose foods with a lot of protein per bite, fortify soups and oatmeal with milk powder or yogurt, use smoothies, and ask your clinician whether a supplement for vitamin D, calcium or B12 makes sense for you.
How do I remember to eat when I'm never hungry?
Stop relying on an internal signal that is no longer working and move the prompt outside: attach meals to things you already do, use alarms that make you stand up, keep food visible, and prepare in the hour you feel capable rather than the hour you need to eat.
What should I eat when I feel full after two bites?
Make the two bites count: protein first, then something water-rich. Yogurt, eggs, cheese, a spoon of nut butter, soup with beans. Then eat again in two hours rather than trying to finish the plate.
Is it bad to eat only once a day on a GLP-1?
Occasionally, no. Routinely, it makes it very hard to reach a protein target or a reasonable micronutrient intake, and it tends to push the whole day's eating into the evening, which is the worst time for a slow stomach. If this is your normal pattern, it is worth raising.
Should I force myself to eat?
"Force" is the wrong frame and it does not work for long. Eating on a schedule in small amounts is the workable version — you are replacing a missing signal, not overriding a present one.
Do liquid calories count if I can't eat solid food?
Yes, and on bad days they are the practical answer. Milk, yogurt drinks, soups and smoothies carry protein and fluid together and ask far less of a slow stomach than a plate does.
